Hey guys! So, I made a post about studying the language a month or so, right? I made progress on it! Not a lot of progress but some progress? With words and everything? Got a few phrases and descriptives and stuff like that!
Hmmm... It'll be easier to explain this if I demonstrated it to you guys, right? Right- I'll use the ocarina for this but, um, I promise, we'll try to transcribe the melodies to other instruments soon. Anyways-
[ daylight then proceeds to play a series of melodies and notes, taking his time to explain what they mean and how to play it on the ocarina.
when he finishes his little demo, he continues talking: ] Later, in the day, I'll add all of this stuff to the spirit language app we have on the tablet here. So you guys can practice it for yourselves if you want to do that.
And... Um... For the next few months, I'll be more focused on trying to crack the grammar of the spirits' language since I think the lexicon - I think that means the total words and stuff? (sorry, grandma!) - is robust enough that I don't need to keep digging for new combinations to the phonetics anymore.
So yeah... That's it! If you guys, like, have questions about how to play the music and, er, stuff- Let me know? I'll try to answer what I can.

This is great, Day. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Just glad I can help you guys out while I can. It seemed like something I could do because I can kind of remember my grandma's lessons on linguistics and cryptography.
More of the former than the latter, though.
@lucius
[ It seems like a skill he'd need if he is to be useful. ]

[ daylight's always happy to help someone else out.
and, well, it seems only right to offer a hand out to someone willing to learn the language if someone expresses an interest in it. that's the whole basis of linguistics, as his grandma once told me. ]
Do you have an ocarina yet? Or know where to get one?

Does humming work? Or does it have to be an instrument?
no subject
[ er. he was using an alien language but- ] And a friend of mine tried using their voice to reply to one a while back. The spirit we were talking to got the general gist of what he was trying to say and everything!
It's all about hitting the right notes, I think.

[An instrument does sound like the best bet.]
Did you make that ocarina?

In order:
- A friendly greeting
- A polite thank you
- "I'm lost."
- The phrase for "Are you okay?", except he missed some fiddly part where he's supposed to hold down down multiple holes or something
- "Show?"
- Another polite thank you ]

Wow! That's really good!
[ oh. hmmm. give him a sec- daylight doesn't have an ocarina but he switches to his father's tongue, using the musical(ish) qualities to let out a series of cheeps and chirrs and sounds to reply back with the following:
Thank you, Person-Friend! Great work! Will show! Will show! ]
@langit; audio >> text
One more ocarina reply - "I am - thank you" - then he'll switch back to text. ]
this must have taken a really long time to figure out
it's so cool that we can talk to them
is this what you did with your grandma back where you're from?

There's a lot of designs and styles to pick from and you don't need to pay for it or anything. Er- Money isn't a thing you need to worry about here because, you know, our current circumstances and all.

I hope this can help foster better relations with the forest spirits here since we have a bigger pool of words and phrases to work with. And with the help of others - shout out to Elle and Soldat! - I hope we can find more ways to communicate with them besides the ocarina, so it's more accessible.
- Daylight!

Indeed. Do you think it might help to show them objects and have them name those in their language? Perhaps we could eventually arrive at more abstract concepts after!

How are you learning? [She's starting to realize she hasn't tried as hard as she could with that.]
no subject
[ day waves for a second but quickly remembers that this is audio-only. right- ] It's been really weird and hard but I've been learning mostly by trial-and-error.
[ the short and sweet (and very inaccurate) version is this: ]
With the, um, phrases we already had in the app, I tried to write out the melodies' notes. Then I tried to figure out what word was assigned to each note. After that it was a case of stringing the notes along and seeing if my friends responded.
[ ... that'll have to do. sorry, grandma. ]
