@daylit; audio.
Hey guys! So, I made a post about studying the language a month or so, right? I made progress on it! Not a lot of progress but some progress? With words and everything? Got a few phrases and descriptives and stuff like that!
Hmmm... It'll be easier to explain this if I demonstrated it to you guys, right? Right- I'll use the ocarina for this but, um, I promise, we'll try to transcribe the melodies to other instruments soon. Anyways-
[ daylight then proceeds to play a series of melodies and notes, taking his time to explain what they mean and how to play it on the ocarina.
when he finishes his little demo, he continues talking: ] Later, in the day, I'll add all of this stuff to the spirit language app we have on the tablet here. So you guys can practice it for yourselves if you want to do that.
And... Um... For the next few months, I'll be more focused on trying to crack the grammar of the spirits' language since I think the lexicon - I think that means the total words and stuff? (sorry, grandma!) - is robust enough that I don't need to keep digging for new combinations to the phonetics anymore.
So yeah... That's it! If you guys, like, have questions about how to play the music and, er, stuff- Let me know? I'll try to answer what I can.

Maybe you can offer lessons to the others then? If they want to learn the language and you're willing, of course. You'll definitely have an easier time using the ocarinas here than me, that's for sure.
no subject
....I can't give anyone lessons.
I, uh, I haven't played an ocarina before....I just lied to you and I'm not sure why.
[For one fleeting moment there it had felt true. That was weird.]
I've played other wind instruments, though, so I'm sure I can pick it up pretty quickly.
...I'm sorry.
no subject
Oh- That's-
[ he falls a little quiet, trying to figure out what to say.
in the end, daylight decides to go with his figurative guts: ] That's okay. I guess we can chalk it up to nerves from chatting, huh? [ he tries to lighten the mood/possible awkwardness by cheerfully adding: ] I used to say some really weird things when I was feeling pressured too!
I was lucky that my friends were often there to bail me out because wow. I got into some weird situations at times, haha.
no subject
Yeah, you're right. It's probably nerves...
...Would it help if I mentioned there are forest spirits where I'm from? That's not a lie, I promise.
no subject
but he's not. he wants to believe, especially about this bit...! ]
Really! That's so cool.
[ daylight's winglets flutter in excitement as she speaks. ] Are you friends with them? The spirits back at your home?
no subject
They let me into their Sacred Grove eventually so that's something.
Normally they don't care for humans much.
[There's a small rustling sound.]
Just between you and me, the Grove spirits can be a bit of a pain.
no subject
he clears his vocoder to pull himself together, trying to sound serious. ]
I'll keep this a secret, buddy! You can count on me for that. [ after all- ] We gotta stick together, you know?
no subject
[Keep a secret, huh?
....There is one secret Link has.
He decides it's easiest to lead into it with a question.]
Hey, can I ask something?
...How did you guys learn the spirit language so far?
no subject
[ daylight sounds honest-to-goodness surprised by the question. ]
Because it's, um, super technical and boring. [ no offence, grandma, but daylight, sometimes, struggled to pay attention to what he was doing when trying to crack the language's lexicon. ] I mean- If you want to know, sure! But... It might take a while to explain it since I'm not the best at it and stuff. I learned a lot of this stuff from my grandma and it's been a while so... yeah.
no subject
[Another small laugh.]
Not it?
no subject
It's why I'm doing this project, honestly. If we can get a better grasp of the language then we can have a better chance to befriend the spirits and be proper-proper allies.
[ daylight sounds so painfully eager as he talks about this bit- he seems very invested in the forest spirits here, for whatever reason. ]
no subject
Since his arrival the spirits have fascinated him.]
What if I told you I can understand 'em? I mean...kinda.
no subject
Judging by the 'kinda' you added there, you mean without needing the ocarina? [ because that? the would be a big leap of possible figuring out the spirits' native tongue. ]
no subject
I don't hear words or anything, exactly, but I get the gist of what they're saying. Is that about how it works with an ocarina?
no subject
[ and, after a beat of silence, daylight really tries his best to broach the topic delicately as he can now: ] Can I ask how you're able to do this? Understand them without the use of the ocarinas?
no subject
If I wander far enough away from my lantern I can turn into a beast. So it sounds like the ocarinas are a lot more convenient.
no subject
[ daylight! please! try to have some semblance of control. ]
I mean- That's a really neat thing to be able to do! Long as you're safe after you do that and stuff. [ that's the most important thing to day. that and knowing something else in particular: ] What was it like? Communicating with them like that?
[ because daylight is very, very interested in this now. having another way to communicate with the spirits is always a big plus since it could unlock information or details they wouldn't be able to get through other conventional means. ]
no subject
But I'm not really sure how to describe it.
They were wondering who I was so I told them. In my beast form, I told them.
Then a big guy with a mirror mask showed up and tricked me into abandoning my lantern so that took up most of the rest of my evening, heh...
1/2 GAG TAG.... BECAUSE I COULD......
2/2 FOR REAL NOW
[ daylight sounds surprised by the last bit and also... worried?
yeah. there's no denying the worry in his voice. ] I don't think I ever came across a spirit who fits the description like that! Weird that they tried to take your lantern from you... Were they... Hm. [ how to describe it? ] Were they being, er, malicious about it? Like cackling evilly or something like that?
no subject
I had to chase them for a while, but they never said anything.
[A beat.]
The spirit smelled like onions.
no subject
Oh- Yuck.
[ onions. he did not like onions so day is certain he's never come across this one before. that smell would have been something he'll remember very, very well. ]
And you got your lantern in one piece since we're talking right now. [ day sighs in relief for him, glad to know he's safe. ] I'm glad they didn't try to, like, break it or anything. I felt my core stutter a bit when I heard that they stole it from you.
no subject
That was a rough moment.
[Pause.]
Your "core"?
no subject
he hums for a bit, trying to find the proper words for his explanation. ] Um- It's basically my, um, heart-and-soul equivalent. Pumps fuel into my line and keeps me alive and and can be located within my chassis. That sort of stuff.
no subject
Whoa, wait.
[Another pause as he processes this.]
So you're some kinda machine?
