I am Merwen, for those whom I have not yet shared meeting.  I am hoping to share knowledge.

I received a message from an unliving doll. I thought it was meant to be a prediction, but it seems to be more a description of a place.

If you've got things you want to get rid of or you want to look for treasure among what others have left behind, there's a place where you can refuel in between two places where both actions can be done.

I am still recently arrived, and I do not know Beacon well enough to think where this place might be, or if this is a place I should seek out.

The first description sounds like the definition of a junkyard.

The second, about refueling-- I'm currently residing in a combination mechanical repair garage and fueling station.

I'm uncertain what the significance of that might be.

I am not sure why I would be directed to your home. Are you between two such places?

Depending on the navigational angle, and whatever the second location refers to, it is entirely possible.

Are you in search of treasure, or trying to be rid of something?

If there is something valuable to us to be found, then I suppose I wish to find it.

You never know what valuables may be out there. I found a backpack's worth of aluminum cans the last time I looked through the junkyard.

If you intend to search, and need a gun at your side, I would be pleased to volunteer.

I'm sorry for any discomfort, but there's nothing to be concerned about, ma'am. I'm a highly-trained soldier and adept with the operation of firearms.

We can't keep hostiles away with our fists and positive thinking alone.

You shouldn't go alone, then, if you choose to do so. It could be dangerous. The place you seek seems to be somewhere between the pawn shop and the scrapheap, judging by the descriptions.

I see. What dangers would you anticipate being there?

Spirits. I know that they do not concern you, madame but it is better that you be cautious of them. There could be any number of hazards hidden within the forest. The building itself could be in disrepair. You should be prepared for anything.

It is true that I am unfamiliar with 'forests.' I have no experience with them, after all.

I accept that I must be cautious with the spirits. I am only reluctant to share anything harmful with them.

Perhaps you should consider covering yourself. There are many rocks and branches that will cut your skin, and you will not travel far on blistered feet.

I do not think the protective coverings you wear will fit webbed feet very well, but I do not think I will need such things. Something across my shoulders may be more useful.

If you insist. Perhaps you may be able to find something at the general store that suits you. A cloak of some sort.

[After following along on the conversation with Danse, Soldat is reminded of their promise to Rosinante... and of their own promise to themselves about keeping her safe. They put together a plate of vegetable casserole to carry up to her room.

They greet her with a smile when she opens the door.]

[She takes the plate gratefully. It's strange food to her, but no less welcome.]

I was following along your conversation with Danse. Wanted to... talk to you about the spirits, some.

[They seem, at worst, embarrassed and maybe concerned, not outright dismissive or stern, at least. So hopefully she doesn't immediately jump to assuming they're trying to talk her out of her ideals.]

[She's not annoyed at all, more amused than anything. She takes a bite of the casserole, though.]

Only if your name is changed to "going alone". But waiting a little to talk to spirits would be a good idea, too.

[They do step inside, though, and take a brief look around to see what, if anything, she's done with the little suite.]

I agree with you on talking first, though. With most spirits. Most of them mean well. Or are just afraid when they lash out. Not all of them, though.

[Her suite is still in the early stages of being personalized, but she is definitely in the process of collecting various potted plants. Some look like they came out of the greenhouse, and a few are just plants from outside she thought were interesting.]

I am glad that at least one person thinks I am not being entirely foolish. So many here are so quick to assume that violence is the only solution. It.... troubles me.

They have done violence on us. Tortured us. Sent us terrible visions that trapped us in them.

[Soldat shrugs a little, awkwardly.]

But those are the spirits with green eyes, mostly. The regular forest spirits, they're mostly reasonable. A few awful ones, like there's awful people sometimes, but. The green-eyes. They're harder to reason with. I've tried.

Do you have something you wish to be rid of or a treasure you hope to find? Sometimes these messages are highly specific. Did you ask it a question first?

I did not ask a question.

I have nothing to be rid of, and I am not certain what I should be seeking, but this message seems significant enough to investigate.

Strange. Last time we had a machine that dispensed answers a question was required first. But it's worth finding out what it's trying to tell you.

If you do seek out this place be careful, not all the spirits that inhabit the area are friendly.

I will take care. I do not share fear for my own sake, exactly, but it seems there are many here who are eager to share their concern for me. It would be unkind of me to refuse that concern.
