hi guys! uhhhh i hope i'm doing this right
my name's sora and some friends and me are trying to build a boat!
we finished a raft first cause it was easier, but i've only seen hand tools laying around so getting the wood and shaping it and stuff sure is taking awhile. we've made a couple before so even though we don't have anything fancy it'll probably just take a few days, but it'd sure go a lot faster with help.
and maybe sandpaper, i only found a little bit.
anyway, is anyone else used to building stuff?
even if you just wanna help out that'd be great! i guess i don't really have a way to pay you or anything, but i'll let you name the boat! that's fair, right? or if we get lots of help we could probably make more than one.
a skiff should be just enough to get around and i figure to hold 2 people it'd have to be like..... 8 feet long, and for 3 maybe at least 12. it's gonna take awhile though! even with my dad and all his stuff back home it was almost 3 whole weeks. i kinda figured if we got lots of hands that we could make up for not having any of the special gadgets. like i heard you can sand wood down by just using rocks inside a shirt! i already have lots of blisters
oh! and riku said it'd be cool to see if anybody knows how to uhhh what was it
make a lens? so we could use
a torch as a spotlight?
i think that part'll be a little further off
[local islander seeks diy enthusiasts and carpenters of dubious skills to build boat and possibly create tiny fleet. he also enjoys long walks on the beach and cakes with fruit inside, not to be confused with fruitcake.]

i didn't see a whole lot of tools so we'd probably need some extra hand saws, hammers, and a drill would be great. it takes forever to make the holes with just a little knife
i guess we'll end up running out of nails and screws after awhile though

Nails and screws . . . I suppose we can ask Rastus.
Now. If I help you with this . . . I'd appreciate a bit of help in return, when the time comes.

I can paint the boat!

good think you're here, they'd all be kinda ugly without your help

Yay! I'll make the boats so pretty that they'll be defended against all the bad things!

it's just like woodworking except a little bigger!

@replica
it'll need to be big enough for it to reflect the torchlight
no subject
kinda like a big flashlight?
no subject
we're going to have to figure out a way to mount it too
but actually building the boat comes first
we can worry about all that later

but we could probably make a more if we get some extra hands and some more tools.
i guess if we work in shifts then it'd take maybe... 10 days? though the first couple'll be a little slower till everybody turns into a pro. mostly it's lots of heavy lifting and getting blisters and having a sore back
that probably doesn't make it sound more convincing though does it

but you could use oars, rope, and some life preservers. do you know how to make those?

@hicks;
... turns out it's a lot of ramblin' off some soul that sounds fair young, but. it reminds him of robbie, almost, an' that's why he volunteers: )
I'm a fair hand at carpentry and I don't mind lending a hand.

In his defense, Sora isn't and never has been very good at this kind of computer thing- he'd only just figured out texting before coming here. Besides, it's not like he designed the apps. Blame the guy who opened up the whole voice to text interface.]
really? that'd be awesome!
what kinda stuff have you built before?
no subject
Furniture, mostly. Some sectional add-ons to a few houses here and there.
But I think our best bet might actually be to use an older method, it'd be simpler by far so long as you don't mind something the size of a canoe at least to start. Folks used to put a log over a fire and let it burn out the insides, then scrape it down. Because it's one piece, you don't have to worry quite so much about leaks so long as you finish it properly. We have more than enough tools to manage that, maybe while we order more things in from Rastus. We'd need a sawmill if we wanted to plane boards with any skill.

(he hasn't checked his tablet in days...)
he was a commander from the marines in his world.
it sounds like he knows his way around a boat and offered to lend a hand.
and thanks for asking about the lens. it's not a priority for now but might be nice to have.
