hi guys! uhhhh i hope i'm doing this right

my name's sora and some friends and me are trying to build a boat!

we finished a raft first cause it was easier, but i've only seen hand tools laying around so getting the wood and shaping it and stuff sure is taking awhile. we've made a couple before so even though we don't have anything fancy it'll probably just take a few days, but it'd sure go a lot faster with help.

and maybe sandpaper, i only found a little bit.

anyway, is anyone else used to building stuff?
even if you just wanna help out that'd be great! i guess i don't really have a way to pay you or anything, but i'll let you name the boat! that's fair, right? or if we get lots of help we could probably make more than one.

a skiff should be just enough to get around and i figure to hold 2 people it'd have to be like..... 8 feet long, and for 3 maybe at least 12. it's gonna take awhile though! even with my dad and all his stuff back home it was almost 3 whole weeks. i kinda figured if we got lots of hands that we could make up for not having any of the special gadgets. like i heard you can sand wood down by just using rocks inside a shirt! i already have lots of blisters

oh! and riku said it'd be cool to see if anybody knows how to uhhh what was it

make a lens? so we could use
a torch as a spotlight?

whoa! really?!

i didn't see a whole lot of tools so we'd probably need some extra hand saws, hammers, and a drill would be great. it takes forever to make the holes with just a little knife

i guess we'll end up running out of nails and screws after awhile though

A drill may be a pipe dream for now, but saws and hammers are doable. Especially the latter.

Nails and screws . . . I suppose we can ask Rastus.

Now. If I help you with this . . . I'd appreciate a bit of help in return, when the time comes.

aw man i had a feeling you'd say that. those holes are the things giving me the worst blisters of all

A laboratory. I wish to build one. I can, but it will take a long time without any help.

Any number of things. There's an entirely new, unprecedented world here; I'd be a poor scientist indeed if I didn't study it. My specialty is quantum physics, but I'm also adept in biology, chemistry, etc.

I notice you didn't the question about the gloves.

wouldn't it be kinda hard to do all that sciencey stuff without light? or electricity?

I see you not answering the gloves question. You don't, do you? It would make your life a great deal easier.

And yes. Electricity especially has been beneficial in the past few years. But given I don't have those things, I must make do with what I have. Sooner or later I'll find a workaround. I always do.

Besides: science has existed for thousands of years.

i couldn't find anymore in the shop! they were all way too big!

[still, what she says about finding a work around is comforting, and maybe in it's own way that's exactly what he needed to hear. everybody here must've been in tough situations before, right? they might not have all the things they want, but that doesn't mean they can't make it work.]

hey, does that mean you have any ideas about reflecting light? you know, for the inside of your lab?

So open them, remeasure, and sew them back together.

And yes. It does. Even a single candle can provide a great deal of light, but my thought was to try and utilize my lantern. Surrounding it by strategically placed mirrors would be a good start.

[It's not that Sora isn't used to having help- he gets help all the time. He's never been the bravest or the strongest or the smartest, there are plenty of things he wouldn't have managed if he was supposed to do them all on his own. But it's the first time he's gotten an offer like that here. With something that isn't a fight. From someone who isn't a friend.]

i'm super interested! i've built things before but i'm not so sure i'm all that good at doing careful, smaller things

For now, yes. If there's more you'd like to learn, I'm certain I'll have a number of tasks that need to be completed. And building a laboratory is difficult work; it may be you wish to ask more of me as the days go by.

actually i was thinking lots about the way magic works here and even though i can't get fire to work, i haven't really been able to try out lightning. cause there's no wires and stuff? though i guess you'll know what to do with that kinda thing better than i will

Raw lightning would be a good start. How precisely would you generate it, though?

i guess i don't really know how to explain i just kinda. do? if its like fire and water and stuff i just think about it and it happens

[She doesn't reply, which presumably means that yes, she fully expects him by the bonfire, hop-to, boyo. But she'll be waiting there, standing and staring at the fire, smoking a cigarette as she does.]

[Sora spends so much of his time on the shore these days. It wasn't really on purpose- first he'd been trying to carve out a little niche. In the absence of rooms at the Invincible he and his friends had settled on hanging hammocks and patching up the ceiling inside the boathouse, not a new home, but a place to call their own at least. And after that they'd started on the raft. After that the more ambitious process of figuing out a boat.

It takes a little time for him to make it up the hill and follow the path towards town square. The bonfire becomes a kind of light at the end of the tunnel and Sora doesn't pass anyone along the way, but he hears voices and the unmistakable signs of life that come with a small town.
