That is so many more than I'd feared.

I just finished checking the numbers. They aren't pleasant.

146 deaths have occurred here since July. Half of those deaths occurred in two large clusters - the feast, and this flood. Chance at revival still holds at around 30% for anyone if you ignore those two events. With them included it drops to 15%.

Of course, right now the chance is 0%. We need to work out how to fix lanterns, and fast.
paletteswap: (Serious)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2020-05-11 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Just glancing at the directory, and assuming those named do not revive, I only recognize 7 names from the original group that arrived with us. That's not a good statistic for our longevity.

Could dropping to half during huge numbers of deaths be due to overloading the system that's utilized to bring the lanterns back? Maybe it's too much too fast to keep up with. Or there's a time limit.

There's probably a lot to learn at Doctor Solis' lab. I know the general area it lies, but not the specifics. We need a better way to lock down that location.
callada: (recuerdos de su condición)

[personal profile] callada 2020-05-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Good question about overloading the system. Especially since the system might just be one woman who can't do everything alone.

I saw your conversation with Clara on the network. Somewhere to the west, by the mountains, right? At least it's a start. And Fjord and Soldat said they found those tunnels from the church, too.
paletteswap: (Will do what is necessary)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2020-05-11 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
If she's been attempting to do everything herself it's likely she was overwhelmed by sheer volume.

There's so few of us. Is it possible there was a reset and we're all that remain? Does it work like that? Maybe the flood was part of it?

Correct, and she sent some sort of star chart to someone else. If we had some sort of mapping infrastructure we could probably pinpoint her location with that, but I'm not sure how to navigate that way.
callada: (Cool Dude TM)

[personal profile] callada 2020-05-11 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody's supposed to survive a reset except for 1-2 people Robin chooses. I guess if there was a signal we might not have heard it through the rain, but we would have seen a lot more death by spirits, not water. Not sure how the lighthouse collapsing would tie in either. Don't think it was a reset.

I have the stars charted for the harbor, so with that, the star map she has, and my sextant I could get us to within a couple miles of accuracy if I could see the horizon. But in the woods, I'd have to estimate where the horizon is, and I might just get people lost if I try that. Now's not the time to lose even more of us. Good thought though if anyone has a better method.

Did go out toward the mountains, though. Mary and I followed one of those feathers and it went out to that little pond by the foothills. Wasn't too bad a walk, just a couple hours in and a couple more out. Did you try following one?
paletteswap: (I hate this place)

[personal profile] paletteswap 2020-05-14 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Likely not, but I'd almost rather there be an explanation than accept we were subdued by a storm. It would be easier to reconcile if their deaths had a purpose.

I'll put something on the network, the more eyes on this the better and we can coordinate a group to go out there. We'll need a crew back here as a base to keep communications with - we can't risk any amount of people dying now.

Feather. Yes, I did. I was able to recover a torch in the forest but there was something else there. Something just out of earshot that was attempting to communicate I think. But I couldn't understand it. We have more important things to deal with now, but I'd like to return in the future and see if I could find what it was.
callada: (recuerdos de su condición)

[personal profile] callada 2020-05-14 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting. Keep me updated when you think you want to return there. I've got my hands full trying to help pick up everything that got scattered and broken by the flood but once things settle down I'd go out there with you.

Nothing. I went all over the places where we've explored. No scents that are less than two days old.

[He sounds grumpy about it, too. He rather liked Quentin. He was a good kid. They've lost so damn many.]

Damnit.

Thanks. I can't imagine what might have happened now. And without Dr. Solis, he won't be back. We need to figure out where her lab is, and what she was doing to revive people, before we all get picked off one by one.
scarsolderthanyou: (nope)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-05-14 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Don't like the sound of that. Makes me think it'd be a good idea if people didn't go anywhere alone for a while. Stick to groups, or at least pairs.

[He's unfamiliar with the phrase "the buddy system" or he'd be using it.]
callada: (solo soy distractor)

[personal profile] callada 2020-05-14 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Now isn't the time to be searching the woods alone. We need to stay safe. I'd suggest a check-in system if I thought anyone would use it but at the very least, people should stick together and should tell someone else where they're going before they go out. That way we know where to search if they don't come back.

( gotta say this post was a real trip for someone who had to have a computerized voice read it to him... once he's had enough time to digest it, though, he's pretty sure he gets the message. and he's not sure he likes it. )

If this is right and Solis is dead, that means we're in a bad spot if a lantern breaks. That post from before, Clara — whoever that is, they seem to have some connection to Solis. Does anyone have a clue on how we can track them down?

With the Lighthouse destroyed and Robin... gone, for now, that means we aren't going to get any restocks, either. We need to think about conserving what supplies we have until we figure out what we can do about that.

( do what, he has no idea. Matt is worried about Robin, but nothing in this bulletin provides details to where she is. they have to focus on other things, now. )

Thanks to the storm, we haven't had a chance to really hash out our losses, or share anything we've found. If you've found something, now's the time to share it.
callada: (dress best in boldly-striped sweaters)

[personal profile] callada 2020-05-11 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Myself and a few others found more supplies at the lighthouse. We brought back what food we could, but there was also a locked building full of paper records. Looked like the sort of requests Robin and Rastus used to manage through the portal, but from before her time.

Mary and I also found a torch, following one of those feathers. Just the torch, but I've heard some people found lanterns belonging to some of the people on this list here. And... [bit of hesitation here, because yeah, ouch, but] Cao Pi found some of Daylight's armor.
catholicisms: (52)

[personal profile] catholicisms 2020-05-11 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
So this list is at least moderately reliable.

( discomforting to think about, but probably good to know there's some sense of accuracy. it means they shouldn't use too much time looking for people that can't be found, or saved, with lanterns out of commission. )

A record of all former requests? What is included in the report?
callada: (recuerdos de su condición)

[personal profile] callada 2020-05-12 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't go through every page, it's endless. Robin said she's been the lighthouse keeper for something like twenty years, right? So imagine decades of printouts, not just one report. It looked like there were number sequences with the lists. Robin could probably explain what those mean if we can find her.

If we go through them we might be able to guess at how long other keepers were around, or even some of the things they thought would help them against World Eaters. Hell, you might even be able to see when resets happened if there's a long gap between requests, or if people order things like bomb components or weapons all at once, and then the next request list is just food and blankets and alcohol.
catholicisms: (22)

[personal profile] catholicisms 2020-05-12 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder why they'd keep a hard record of all the requests that have been processed. Surely they had some sort of reason.

But you're right, it could tell us some historical information. If other groups asked for something in particular, it could be worth investigating once we figure out how to use a portal to get supplies in the first place.

I hope this bulletin is right and she's out there okay somewhere.

( not just because she could give them intel on the lists and portals, but also because he's worried about her. )
callada: (se siente bien estar aquí)

[personal profile] callada 2020-05-12 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Hope she's all right, too. I'm glad she's not stuck there anymore but this probably isn't the way she wanted to be set free.

Also, I should mention - most of what we found at the lighthouse site is pretty trashed. All her equipment is in pieces. If I understand the role of the lighthouse right, that means no more resets.
catholicisms: (402)

[personal profile] catholicisms 2020-05-12 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
No more resets, no more getting supplies through Robin, and no more lantern repair.

( all of that sounds pretty bad, honestly. )

None of us wanted to be reset, I'm sure. But that means we only have so much more time, and we just got set back a hell of a lot. Behind where we even started, almost. We need to prioritize on finding a way to repair lanterns, and how to get a portal running for supplies. I just wish I knew the best way to do that.

Probably finding the lab. Between Clara and the talk of tunnels, there's got to be a way there somewhere.

[He does sound kind of subdued in the wake of that list, even if he hasn't parsed all the names, since reading text is time-consuming.]

Well, if we're sharing things.

There's a bunch of records and shit at the lighthouse, behind a stone door in some kind of secondary building. No sign of Robin, though. Nothing to track, I tried, but no sign of blood or a body, either.

We brought back all her supplies and some of her personal things, it's all at the Invincible. If somebody else wants to go back and dig through the machinery shit for anything that might be useful, I'll carry people there, but it looks like the woods around where the lighthouse was are safe now, too. No spirits.
catholicisms: (22)

[personal profile] catholicisms 2020-05-11 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
( Matt is worried about Robin, has been since he heard about what happened to the Lighthouse. the idea she's more or less vanished isn't exactly comforting, though the mention of her being with spirits is better than her being on the list of the dead. right? )

If this can be believed, the spirits are looking after her. I hope that means we'll get an idea of where she is sooner rather than later, but it wouldn't make sense to not list her in the obituaries if she was dead.

I can't help much with computers, but hopefully somebody can. We haven't been able to explore those woods, until now. Maybe that'd be a good place to start looking.
scarsolderthanyou: (curious)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-05-14 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't get the impression there's much in there, flying over them with supplies, but I can look again. I wasn't really looking for things down below that much that weren't threats.

I don't see why this couldn't be believed, though. If they think she's alive, then there's good chance she is. The spirits know her better than the rest of us, by a lot.
catholicisms: (Default)

[personal profile] catholicisms 2020-05-16 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
It's hard to be confident she's okay when we can't see her or figure out where she is. That's all.

( Matt doesn't dislike the spirits... but especially after what happened with the Green Eyes, he's not enormously trusting of them, either. )

Let us know if you get a bead on anything down there.
scarsolderthanyou: (Default)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-05-17 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Yeah, but Stone figures if the spirits knew where she was, and didn't want the rest of them to know, they'd be gloating not saying they're looking.

Well, not important, really. He says instead:]

At least I got her scent from her things. I'll see if I can find a hint of it anywhere in the woods nearby.
catholicisms: (Default)

[personal profile] catholicisms 2020-05-18 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Did you bring over anything that belonged to her when you were moving the supplies?

( because Matt doesn't like to talk about it, but, he's also capable of keeping a nose out for Robin. )
scarsolderthanyou: (Default)

[personal profile] scarsolderthanyou 2020-05-27 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
There's some personal things I didn't want to leave out to the elements, yeah. They're upstairs in the Invincible.
pure_havoc: (determined)

[personal profile] pure_havoc 2020-05-11 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I had been concerned since the report on the tunnels under the church, but the message from the...assistant [look he still doesn't know what a robot is or that CLARA is one] nearly sealed it. This is only confirmation.

If the floodwaters did not wash away our stockpiles, we will have to dip into them. Bring them together somewhere that can be protected.
catholicisms: (8)

[personal profile] catholicisms 2020-05-11 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Clara also said she was working on something. A portal experiment. If that's the case, she might have had access to some sort of portal at her lab.

The question is where. A lot of things seemed to be stored in the Invincible right now, though at this point I imagine more of us will need to stay there.

Was the store itself damaged? That's a central location, if it survived the flood we could restock it with what we have until we secure a way to find more.
pure_havoc: (Default)

[personal profile] pure_havoc 2020-05-19 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It is generally intact, but quite dirty inside, and some of the remaining items that were not relocated are a bit soggy and mud-covered. I fear that may not bode well for some supplies but others may be only superficially dirty and thus salvageable.

But, yes, as we find things of use, the store itself seems a perfectly decent place to collect them. Lady Pudding has been keeping an inventory, she may be able to stay on top of those records.
catholicisms: (Default)

[personal profile] catholicisms 2020-05-22 04:58 am (UTC)(link)

Dirty isn't ideal, but at least that's an easier fix than caved in walls. Hopefully we can salvage most of it.

I'll direct inquiries that way when it comes to supplies, then.

I found a feather that lead me to where a torch was located after a none too insignificant trek in the woods, but I don't suppose that helps with anything as far as keeping us alive goes.

Well, it might if you saw anything of interest along the way. Hard to tell what might be helpful until we investigate it further.

Do you remember seeing anything in particular? Where did you find your torch?

Past the greenhouse. [ she'd had to look at the map to get what the name of the giant glass house was. not for his sake, since she doesn't know he's blind, but she's trying to familiarize herself with modern everything. ] Everything leading to it looked overgrown, like it was the first time anyone had been there in a while, but people had definitely been there once. There was a path that was just barely visible.

[ ah, where'd she'd found it. here's where things get gross. ]

It was inside a tree that had been glowing right before some kind of creature tore it in half and started eating what was inside. I picked it up and brought it back to town.

Any of that sound significant to you?
catholicisms: (Default)

[personal profile] catholicisms 2020-05-12 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well, unexplored forest that we haven't combed over might be worth another check. There might be something out there worth finding.

Was the spirit hostile toward you?

( because something that can tear apart trees and especially one willing to cannibalize other spirits sounds a little questionable. )

Spirits willing to eat other spirits are likely just as willing to eat us. I'm glad you got out of there safely.

Other than that, I can't say the description narrows things down for me any. But for lack of other options, it wouldn't be a horrible thing to keep pushing on in that direction, and see what's out there. Just... maybe not alone, if there's a potentially dangerous spirit there.

It seemed like it was more hungry for something a lot smaller than me, but thanks.

I could probably find it again if I needed to, but it didn't look like it lead anywhere significant. All I could find was the tree and the path.

If it's uncharted territory, it might be worth exploring. If not now, then later.

There's still so much of this place we don't know. And there's at least a chance there's something useful out there, if we dig far enough to find it.
