Hey guys! It's Daylight again and I have a new update for the spirit language project! I was hoping to release one last month but things were... you know...
...
....
..... hectic.
[ yeah. let's go with that. ]
So! Right! For those who are new: The project I'm talking about is all about attempting to understand the language of the spirits more and making it more accessible for others. In January, I figured out some new phrases and words we could use with them. This month, I think we've made some real progress again!
[ day goes on to explain what the progress exactly is and, to his credit, it does seem to be a lot of advancement. in the past month, the following was tackled:
with the significant help of elle and duster, the following instruments have been transcribed to play the spirits' melodies: the piano. the double bass. the bongos. the kazoo.
(day makes a note to mention that he listed them in order of progress, so they should keep that in mind.)
there was also major progress in cracking the spirits' language itself! one of the things day discovered is that the spirits' treat the use of musical instruments more like 'accents' than anything else. wind musical instruments are easier for the spirits to understand than, say, percussion instruments.
the further one deviates from the original instrument (the ocarina), the heavier the 'accent' the speaker is using when speaking with spirits. it makes it harder for the spirits to understand but long as you finish what you're saying and give them time to answer, they should reply back.
when he finishes explaining the major discoveries and progress: ] This will be all added to the spirit language app that we have on the tablet. The app also has the packet of phrases and words I found so you're free to practice those too. Ocarinas can be found in the general store, free of cost, and feel free to reach out towards Elle and Duster if you want to take a crack of the instruments they transcribed!
Um- What else...? Oh! Like before, if you guys have any questions about how to play the music or the instruments, let me or the others know! We'll do what we can to help each other out while we're here! Thanks for listening!
[ and, with that, daylight ends the audio- but not fast enough, because he fumbles a bit with the tablet. it'll allow some people, if they have sharp hearing, to hear the following as day mutters under his breath: ]
Next mission: Figuring out how music boxes work. What the heck am I supposed to do with-

he's never tried to properly teach or lead anyone before but, hey, first time for everything...? ] And— Um— I wanted to say thank you again for helping out in this! The progress wouldn’t have been possible if not for you and Elle’s help.

Speaking of music- Hey- Duster- Do you know anything about music boxes?
no subject
[...He feels Daylight needs more help than that.]
I never built one.
no subject
before he explains what's going on, he realises he should probably gauge duster's willingness to interact with spirits: ] Soooo... Have you been with the spirits so far? Had any interactions with them, lately?
no subject
no subject
[ but- right- come on, day! focus! ] So... Does that mean you wouldn't be interested in the idea of meeting more spirits, then? Because I was thinking of something but it required another person, possibly.
[ the buddy system is very important when one goes to the woods, after all. ]

no subject
sorry, main conversation topic, but it looks like daylight is going to get sidetracked- ] Ghosts? You can talk to ghosts where you're from? Oh my gosh, that's so cool...!
no subject
no subject
[ because huh... that's both a practical and nice reason to give them gifts. ] Do- Do they have, like, a preference for gifts? Candles or flowers or... something else?
no subject
Like, if I have some rotten food with me, I can give a few in exchange for some actual food and supplies. That sort of thing. A couple once asked me to beat up a ghost that was bullying the others.

[ he knows remy - day feels a pulse of sadness when he thinks of the guy, hoping he's okay, wherever he is - had set up some markers for the trees where spirits lived and he was in the middle of making them proper houses.
perhaps making a trading centre for the ones who want somewhere to live and don't mind them could be a good idea...? that's an idea he keeps a tab of for another idea because you gotta focus, day! come on-]
I think that could work with the spirits here. Trading stuff with them, I mean. They're pretty... easy to please, once you get an understanding of them and how they work.
no subject
[Unfortunately, the nightclub might be more of their style.]
But they can give us any herbs or stuff they come across that we can use.
no subject
[ day doesn't think he'll ever go to the nightclub voluntarily by himself but- it would be a good venue to hold something musical related to them.
what no- day! come on! you gotta concentrate here. (and, with that, he actually remembers the original conversation topic that started his and duster's chat.) ]
Speaking of coming across the spirits... Do you think, um, you'd like to help out with me on something in the future? Dr. Solis mentioned the music box could be used with them but I never got around to- I don't know how to say it- Using it with them?
Don't know when I'll do it but is it something you'd be interested in?
no subject
[Who is he to refused a quest that can help many people?]
Do you want me to bring a torch?
no subject
[ daylight hadn't thought of asking for a torch from rastus, so duster asking if one should be brought really helps jog his memory. ] We both should bring a torch, probably. Never hurts to be too careful, you know?
no subject
[Yay for fire! With a big group, nothing can go wrong.]
audio; @lonk
...I still haven't tried it.
Re: audio; @lonk
Oh? You haven’t tried to speak in their language yet? I guess you’re doing the, um, form and charades thing then, huh?
no subject
I've been doing something else. And I can mostly understand the spirits when I do it. So I was wondering if it was the same when people used instruments, you know? Like you say something and know what they say back.
no subject
It's just- [ hmm... give him a sec to think this through... ] There's a sharper learning curve for this method, I think. Not only do you have to learn the language of the spirits, but you have to learn how to play the instrument too. But once you get the hang out of it, it's... easier. Definitely faster than charades and hand gestures. The spirits are pretty forgiving when it comes to mistakes.

[She's also really bad at using the apps because she isn't sued to technology.]
no subject
Think of it as like learning a new song? You don't know the lyrics right off the bat since it's new and, admittedly, overwhelming but you just gotta pick up the melody and listen to it a few times. It'll start to make more sense sooner or later!
no subject
[She frowns and tries to remember everything she's been told about music.]
I hadn't heard a lot of music until I arrived in Beacon. But if I learn songs then maybe I can learn this too?
no subject
for all he knows, she could have been super busy with, like, studies and stuff. emer is like that. ]
Um- Ah- Yeah! That's a good way to approach it. If you want- I can help you. It's the least I can do for you guys.
no subject
I would like that very much.
If you'd like, in return, I can draw something for you.
no subject
Really? That's sweet of you to offer! Thanks. [ he's definitely going to take the offer up because he loves art. then day hesitates a bit, not wanting to derail the conversation too much because they'll need to work on some details of the arrangement.
and yet- ] Does this mean you're an artist too?
no subject
I am.
I love drawing.
[A beat.]
It's all I really know how to do.
no subject
day feels his core twist at that admittance, feeling empathy rush through him out of the blue. whether it was from the hesitance or the possible implications, he feels a lot for namine at this moment.
then he realises he's being weirdly quietly and yikes. ]
Um! Well- [ say something, day. come on! ] I- I bet that means you're really good at it then. Drawing.
[ goodish start. ] I- I guess that settles it- I'd love to do a trade with you. One of your super-cool drawings in return of me being a dork over making weird noises with the spirits.
Speaking of the spirits... Have you had any interactions with them so far since you came here? Good? Bad? Weird?
no subject
I'd like that! Drawing new things is fun.
[She recalls the odd spirit she'd seen during the races.]
Not too much. I remember watching the races but there was this odd large spirit that hadn't acted like any of the others. It hadn't said anything but it was... different. I have a drawing of it somewhere.
no subject
a large odd spirit that hadn't acted like any of the others...? day is going to presume it meant the spirit was still around then and hadn't launched themselves into the sky during the aurora borealis event. ]
If you don't mind, could you send a picture of it over? [ wait- no- ]
Or, hm, I could go to you, wherever you are? We can hash out more details about the deal in person while we're at it, too.
no subject
I can wait here or meet you there.
[A beat.]
I live at the Landmark Inn.
no subject
when he has that written, he says in a cheerful voice, ] I can meet up with you at the bonfire then! If you already have plans to go there, I can just meet up with you since I have nothing else to do at the moment. And- We can be drawing buddies and stuff!
If, um, that's okay with you, of course.
no subject
Of course it's okay. I can't wait to see you again and I love having friends to draw with. I draw with Jason and there is a girl named Mary who draw too. [They should form a club.]
I'll see you there.
( action! )
when he arrives at the bonfire, he isn't hard to spot thanks to his status of being the tallest individual. ]
Hey! It's me! Day!
[ ... but, just in case, he makes himself known upon reaching the agreed-upon meeting spot. he even has one of his sketchpads out, waving it in the air to show it's him! hey!! ]
( action! )
[She remembers the brief introduction between Day, herself and Sora. Not that it isn't easy to recognize him. He is so much taller than anyone else she's met in Beacon and seeing him always makes her smile just a little wider.]
Hello Day. It's good to see you.
[Naminé has her own sketchpad clasped against her chest.]
Do you want to sit by the fire?
[It's warm, there is enough room for both of them and the bonfire makes seeing things easier.]
no subject
Sure! [ it's nice to see her in-person again and he thinks she looks well, which is a relief with how weird the last few months have been. ] It's still pretty chilly out right now, so sitting by the bonfire would be nice.
It'll be nice to get some better lighting from my sketches. I feel like some of my drafts right now are pretty wonky with how I can't see certain things. [ he rubs the back of his neck as he laughs a bit, more at himself than anything because he definitely needs to get more practice under his belt.
day sits down on the ground, crosslegged, to show he's game for this. he does his best to not take up too much space. he opens his sketchbook to find a fresh page, revealing a collection of colourful sketches of landscapes he worked on in the past.
(though the blending of yellows look a little... strange. hm.) ]
no subject
Naminé takes a seat by the fire and pulls her sketchpad onto her knees. Her expression is soft as she lifts the book and hands it up to him to look through. The drawing on the open page is to the strange spirit she'd met. Her drawings were colorful but drawn with pencils like sketches. They were accurate backgrounds but the people had slightly larger heads than they probably should. It's just her style.]
I like it. It's very pretty.
Is this a picture of somewhere here?
sorry for the delay!
but- yes-)
daylight is peering at her work for so long, admiring the drawings, that he almost doesn't catch her comment and question. he's totally not squeaking in surprise and trying to catch himself now. oh no- ]
Um- Yeah! It's when I was travelling with my shipmates. We were on shoreleave and... hang on... [ daylight opens turns the page of the landscape over, trying to see if he had written any notes about it. ] Yeah! Shoreleave. It was a sight I had to capture.
[ he smiles now, rubbing the back of his neck in a sheepishly fond manner at the memory coming back to him now. ] Even if Emer was hollering at me the whole time for leaning over the fence. Had to make sure I got it, you know?
