hey
so me and wash and gene were gonna go on an adventure in the woods
see what we can find, you know?
but we're looking for a couple of people to bring with us
maybe two or three
gene's a medic, wash is a marine, and i'm a wizard with experience dealing with monsters and nasty magic
anyone that thinks they could round that out would be great
but no serial killers or anyone that would like
murder us in our sleep
and sorry, but no kids yet
i know some of you are gonna argue that, but we have no idea what we're dealing with and we don't want that on our consciences
anyway, let us know

we've all died here so what exactly are you protecting the kids from?

back home i worked a job where a bunch of kids were being tortured repeatedly and used as a power source in necromancy rituals
they wanted kids and teenagers specifically
seems a little worse than dying to me, but what the fuck do i know

that's awful, sorry you went through that.
I get it. you don't want some kids getting hurt weighing on you.
a lot of these kids didn't get here by accident. they fought a war.

it's not that i don't want it weighing on me
it's that one of those kids didn't have anywhere to go, so we took him in, and i got to see just how badly it fucked him up
i don't want anyone to have to go through that if they don't have to
and i wouldn't even be that against it if i knew for sure that we could kill whatever the fuck is out there
almost everyone i've talked to said their powers seem at least a little different, and healing spells aren't working the way they should
if i knew that whatever spirits or liches or monsters we were probably going to deal with were even killable, yeah, sure, whatever
but we don't

I'm not trying to convince you to take kids along on your expedition.
I guess I'm trying to say it's a mistake to write off all the resources you have available. and pretty sure most of these kids are as worried about something bad happening to you as you are for them. we're all in this together.

he's looking for soldiers. people who take orders and don't ask questions. knowing where someone stands is useful.
you mentioned you're a wizard. turns out a few of us trained under one, they're pretty rare where we're from.

they're not where i'm from
but it seems like they are in every other world i've heard of
and this isn't a military unit, but if someone says "we're retreating" and half of the party starts arguing about how we can totally take the thing, that's not awesome

yeah. like I said, knowing where someone stands is useful. it's not wrong to have a position.
Master Yen Sid had a number of apprentices, including the king.
but none of us were wizards and only a few became keyblade masters themselves.
I'd be interested in talking about your world when you're not so busy.

this isn't the only expedition that's ever going to happen here. this is just the one where a friend of mine who's seen a lot of kids die doesn't want to see that happen.

i don't think that's unreasonable.

i don't think it is either. i know that people do things when they're scared

but that's not the way he's explaining it to me, so even though i see your point of view, it also feels like one of you is lying. and that won't help anything either.

i don't know what else to tell you. no one can stop you from doing what you want to do, because i was the same way at your age.

you guys might be master swordsmen for all i know, but i don't want to see kids die while i'm parsing out terrain. i know you'll say something about us not being responsible for you, but that's just

[It's a sentiment he can understand, even if he's also accepted the inevitability. But he can't expect everyone he meets to have grown enough to reach that place.

In the space between those two points he can listen to the needs of the people around him, and make sure that he doesn't put someone vulnerable, like Nate, in that position while he's here. And that's fair to ask.]

but it's worth remembering that there are plenty of ways to help that don't mean going along with you

and you'd be better off preparing for what's out there by asking around first

listen, i've known teenagers with amazing fighting and magic skills, and i'd be just as pissed in your position

this isn't an intent to be exclusionary, it's that someone i trust has already seen enough kids get hurt and doesn't want that for the duration of ONE expedition

I believe her intent is to protect herself as much as it is to protect kids. sounds like she's been through a lot.
this isn't about going on her expedition. this one or any that come after.
the point is we all have something to offer regardless of our backgrounds.
it's a mistake to write them off.

I understand but you said it yourself. there's no way people weren't gonna speak up about this.
if this was about dividing up work, it wouldn't be a problem. but it's not.
there's a whole bunch of us a lot of you don't want involved in anything dangerous.
if the guardians decided to shut out anyone under a certain age we would never have won the war, every world would have fallen.
