( It's been nearly a day since the bridges have been built, connecting the northern half of Beacon to that of the eastern half. Javert has already conducted a full patrol of the village, inspecting the buildings and taking meticulous notes of the damage. He doesn't have time to delve into the details, tired as he is, and drained, though he does feel it pertinent to mention, )

It seems we will have to find new location to practice combat training and first aid. The gymnasium does not look as if it's worth the effort to salvage, with the ceiling caved in and the building filled with water.

Any suggestions you have would be helpful. I'd be inclined to offer the armory, seeing as it is already stocked with weapons and supplies, but it is too far inconvenient to access without a nearby bridge. Perhaps that can be remedied.

If there are any other skills you believe we should teach one another, I ask that you speak up. I'm sure there are many of you who'd prefer to be taught by someone of our group rather than that of a stranger. With Dr. Solis gone, it seems more imperative now than ever that we keep each other alive.

Combat can take place anywhere there's space, can't it? Maybe near the harbor.

There's also the school. Could clear trees in front of it to make an open yard, and the classrooms could be useful for first aid training. Building seems to be in good shape.

Cutting the trees would be a simple matter.

( He has a chainsaw, it can't get much simpler than that. )

I'm sure it would suit our purposes well. Though, from what I recall, the classrooms still need a bit of work, do they not?

The flood washed a lot of the rooms clean, actually. Probably just need to move the furniture. Seems like the one place that came out ahead in all this somehow.

Sir. I know many of the survival skills that the Wild Hunt was teaching. And how to swim.

And anywhere else you would like to teach I will help set it up. I like the armory as it is defended and already has mats, but the school is closer. We could clear out an actual classroom.

What do you say about us sparring outside? I fear may not be enough room for everyone in the schoolhouse, small as it is.

Is there anyone here that doesn't know how to swim?

I know of at least two people sir. Which means there are probably more I don't know about.

Outdoors is fine as long as the ground is level and free of animal holes and rocks.

Perhaps that could be taught down at the harbor, then. I hadn't realized it was such a concern.

The armory, at least, should have a little more space, and it will not put us at the mercy of the elements. It'll require some work to tidy up, however.

[Defined tasks are great. And Soldat finds they really miss teaching.]

I am happy to clean it up sir. After we rebuild the bridge there so no one has to pass through the amusement park to get there I can start on that.

Good. I may need your help to pry the weapons from the wall. In the meantime, however, it would not be a terrible idea to begin collecting supplies for the bridge.

( It's not an order. Javert has long since given up on telling him what to do, despite still being considered his handler, but it is a task. Something Soldat can choose to do or not, at his leisure. That seems to suit them both better. )

There are a lot of weapons. Could leave some for decor.

I can start bringing wood and metal scraps to the riverside each time I pass on my patrol. When do you wish to start building?

In two days. Would that be enough time to collect what is needed?

Yes. The spirits are helping. And there are a lot of felled trees and damaged cabins nearby.

[And Soldat has super-strength. They can do this. It'll fill the empty hours between patrols and meals and attempting to sleep better than moping in the church will.]

Take what you need from the cabins. I don't think it likely many will return there.

( And with their dwindling numbers, it's not as if they'll need the space. )

[They'll probably only take from the ones with actual structural damage. Just in case. But he does have a point.]

Probably not. Separating us again over a river with a bridge that might wash out does not seem like a good idea.

That is what I have been saying since the beginning.

I know, sir. There were just too many of us to fit in the Invincible, for a long time.

[It might not have been tactically sound, but it was still necessary.]

There are much fewer of us now. And we have the Landmark, too.

Which is where they should stay, if not in the Invincible. There has never been enough room all for us in the inn. When I first arrived, many were forced to live outside in tents like vagabonds.

Sounds terrible.

[Sarge in particular makes a groan in the back of their mind. Camping. Tents. Yuck.]

Would never have worked in the blizzard.

Perhaps that is why they weren't here overly long. I cannot say I cared for it either.

Now we will all fit in the two big buildings.

( He feels a swell of pride, as he often does whenever a superior remarks on his good work. It takes him a moment to compose the next response, not because he is inept at using his tablet, but because he's a little too emotional, )

If there is anything else you require of me, you need only ask. There are not so many of us left, and there is still much for us to do.

There is indeed, but it would not do well to exhaust ourselves or work ourselves to death in the present climate.

You may be one of few still available to patrol and keep track of our safety and defenses. Do not hesitate to use the emergency measures to call for help if necessary. We cannot lose anyone, right now.

I think you overestimate my importance, sir, but I will try. As for work, I will do as much as I can before exhaustion takes me. I am used to it.

( He's already been lectured once on the importance of destressing, and he can't say he cares for it. )

That sucks, but I'm sure there are plenty of spaces we can convert and that aren't flood damaged. We've already been building bridges so adding one more probably wouldn't hurt -- not to mention as you said the armory already has a lot of the supplies we need.

I'll be happy to help with any set up and of course continuing with lessons and training once we've finished some of the clean up anyway.

It might not hurt to add some broader survival skills -- so much has changed now that it probably wouldn't hurt to do a little more to learn how to survive off the land here and more skills related to preparation as opposed to just defense or dealing with injuries.

That was my thinking as well. I don't know much about it myself, but at the least, I can teach others how to tie a knot and navigate the darkness using the stars.

( Matt has always kept up on the lessons Javert has been running, even though he's never joined in. too busy hiding things, really, and besides. there's always been plenty of individuals able to teach hand to hand.

I'm not sure how well it could translate, but I've spent most my life living and functioning in the dark. I could try teaching others how I do it. Might help us be more aware of our surroundings.

( As if Javert could ever deny Matt a chance to help out. He considers the other man's offer curiously, thinking on it a moment, )

It wouldn't hurt. It could help you focus on the sounds.

I'm sure it wouldn't be easy to teach. But if it helps even a little, I'm willing to try it.

I have no objection to it. Though I must ask: would it be preferable to teach such a thing in the outdoors?

( There'd be plenty of sounds for them to distinguish from, and more open space for them to navigate. It seems the most logical decision, but Matt's the one who would know best. )

It's far more easy to pick up sounds in an enclosed space. They bounce off walls, instead of floating off endlessly. Less background noise to get distracted by.

I'd start inside. Work our way out.

Perhaps the armory will suit you, then. There should be enough space in the basement.

I'm not sure what I can offer that most other people haven't covered already, but I'm happy to help round out other people teaching things. Or work alongside them to help expand it more - I saw Soldat talk about swimming lessons before, at the very least I can make sure people don't drown trying.

That would be most helpful. The water near the harbor shouldn't be quite so treacherous, but even so, I do not wish to take any risks.

You're a sailor. Perhaps you could teach others how to tie a proper knot.

Even so, you never quite know what might be lurking. [He finishes the thought with all due politeness, but still.] I'm not sure if word's made it your way yet, but I've got some connection with water. If something water-based were to try anything on us, I'd be in the best position to keep it at bay.

Knot tying isn't all too hard, if everyone wants to learn one or two to get real good at, it'd give everyone plenty more options to use.

There are some do not know how to do it at all. It would be beneficial for them to learn.

Yes, that's right! I'm keeping a running inventory as well, in the case we have need for swift movement of supplies again.

That's good. We may need to be mindful of our supplies with no ferry coming this month.

I'm sure there's much for you to teach us. I confess I do not know so much about cooking myself.

I'm very glad to do so! In another event when the spirits who man the food counters can't be accessed, I would want everyone to know at least basics, safety precautions, and the like. If one of us survives some disaster only to die of food poisoning or starvation or thirst... I don't want that to happen.

That is what I hope to achieve as well. There's already been far too much unnecessary death in this place.
