it is more than currents. I will admit that I had an unusual vision, with the disclaimer that I am not now nor have I ever been prone to visions. it was startling enough to nearly knock me off my feet.
it appeared as though the water vanished and then rushed back to drown me, like a great wave at sea. but, it didn't actually move. I was not wet nor knocked off the rocks into the water, it was simply a trick of the eye or mind.
the person with me saw nothing, so I know it was not a physical barrier, only a vision. given that it happened as I was reaching into the water, it seems reasonable it was some sort of...deterrent.
you have as much as I can tell you. the bridge remnants were nothing useful, otherwise.
it is wise, to collect such information all together where we can all read it. if there is something, say, magical about the river, it would make sense to have another corroborate but I would not risk lives needlessly in the venture.

no discernible threats on the other side. there might be something in the water.
do you have a special ability that will help you across?

no, but I did find the remains of a bridge in my travels. if it was spanned before, it can be again.
you had an unusual experience with the water, I take it? [what a coincidence...]
