[text] @m.hughes; crosswords [open]

Okay. I give up.

Rosinante and I have been pouring over this crossword puzzle book from the General Store for a long time and between the two of us we just have no idea what some of these clues are referring to.

You guys are all from different worlds, right? Maybe one of you can help us.

[He includes a picture. The picture is an open puzzle book, turned to a mostly completed crossword puzzle page. Anyone from a normal, modernish Earth might realize that most of what they have left blank are due to context problems related to being from very different realities.

Feel free to tease them, help them, or somewhere in between.
]

((ooc: Lauren helped me make this post by putting together a visual reference for you all. The words highlighted in pink are the words that Maes and Rosinante DO NOT KNOW. We figured we would give you the solutions, in case you are like us and play characters who would actually BE GOOD at crosswords while we are not.

Replies may come from Maes or Rosinante as they are both far too invested in solving this now.))

5 down is Uzi.

68 across might be engines? I don't do crosswords.

[Not that often, anyway.

She knows guns though.]

Couple days on and off? Maes is better at these than I am, I found that out.

Who or what is Pharaoh?

A title, similar to King or Emperor. Much like a king has a crown, a pharaoh had an ankh-- although it wasn't solely used as a symbol of him, so the simile has its limits.

They ruled over a country called Egypt once upon a time.

Got it, thanks. This'll help. That whole upper left was looking almost impossible for a while.

Uzi Gal? What a name. Thanks.

And engine, huh? I know what an engine is but what's the v-8 part of it mean?

It's an impressive effort, considering cultural references are rather difficult unless you're enmeshed in the culture itself.

Which ones did you recognize?
callada: (recuerdos de su condición)

Mostly just the general words and some got filled in through context. For example, I still don't know what animatronics are, but we figured out Babe is the answer just because the rest of the words around it worked.

There's only one Leonardo that matters in Terran history, and the rest of his name is da Vinci.
I'd say that last part's your 11 down.

[Does he have any clue whatsoever where "Vinci" is? NOPE.]

So you think he's named after where he came from?

i'd ask if you were living under a rock but it's probably some multiverse thing, isn't it
callada: (Cool Dude TM)

[personal profile] callada 2020-01-18 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, not doubting. Just unusual. Glad it fits. Makes 19-across doable, actually. Atoner.
vampirella: (00254)

[personal profile] vampirella 2020-01-18 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
( tbh her admitting it must be some multiverse thing instead of just saying he's uncultured is way less rude than she could be. for example, )

not unless you can't spell and you mean artemis

isola d'elba.

( she's not gonna give an exact number, but, there's at least an answer. )
donttalktome: (i'll consider it except i won't)

I believe that's how that language works, but old Earth languages are not my specialty.
Still, I think it means "of Vinci" or "from Vinci". Something like that.
People apparently didn't really do surnames back then.
callada: (me abandonó sin avisar)

[personal profile] callada 2020-01-18 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. A couple of the dead languages back home people still use parts of in common speech and that's a word I even recognize, but hadn't expected it in this context.

[He's just gonna smile to himself over here about that from-the-even-farther-future theory. Maybe it's not so absurd after all.]

What's he famous for?
callada: (intento saciarte de mi)

[personal profile] callada 2020-01-18 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
20 across also. This will go fast with just a few more.

( she has no comment on how she was technically helpful just now. if she doesn't respond to it, it doesn't exist. right? is that how that works? )

what are you doing crusty old earth word searches for anyway? is everyone that bored around here?
