what's the best way to ask someone out?

that isn't "just go up to them and ask". I've tried, it don't work.

...asking for a friend, of course.

Probably for the best...though if you're worried about that then it's pretty clear that person is also "here"...unless you're just being cautious on the off chance they arrive here.

Either way, good move.

Getting rejected isn't always a bad thing. It can hurt, but it's still important to respect both sides of any relationship. If you don't want to tell me information about the person in question that's fine, but just think about the things they like and approach it from that angle. Also maybe find out how they've handled surprises or requests in the past...if they don't like surprises then a "big move" might not be the best one.
