[ Kairi.

He's been seeing her since she died, seeing her washed up on a shore so far from home ever since he heard she'd drowned. Riku's heart has been heavy with the weight of her loss since then, the pain has not lessened with time. It just sits there, as heavy as a stone in his chest.

So he sounds a little thready, a little strangled when he says: ]

Use as many words as you need. I want to understand. You went through all this trouble.

[ He recognizes some of these voices, familiar cadences he can't help but pick out of the mass of sounds. Winters. Gene. Dawn. Sora. He hears many he recognizes and so many more he doesn't, too many to count.

There have been dozens of resets. The spirits remember all of them, every person who came here before.

Does it haunt them? This endless parade of doomed strangers? Riku can't help but wonder. ]

So that's it...

Did you try this with the ones who came before us? Did we never listen? Or were you still learning how to communicate?

[ They've been trying - some of them - in their own ways. Mary noticed someone was hungry. Daylight's been trying to talk to them. Sora and the canned peaches he'd ask for from the shop, for his shy friend. Birdsong and ocarina music. ]

Why? Why attack us?

[ Riku remembers that spirits could give peculiar gifts and if not received the "right" way, even if it seemed completely innocent on his own part, could have consequences, could be a grave slight.

He can't keep approaching this as if they have the same mentality, the same perspective. ]

...

[ You won't eat. He mentally backs up and reconsiders what this implies. Those who age the feast fell into a deep and uninterruptible slumber. We asked, we wanted to learn about this place and what happened, there's no one else like the other Beacon residents willing or able to tell, so the spirits are doing it their own way.

Showing them before they came here.

Riku's own experiences with sleep and dreams makes the connection an easy one to make, the green-eyed spirits can make them see and hear things while awake, it would be an easy matter - easier, even - to do so while they slept. ]

If you told us this before the feast, no one would have had to get hurt! I understand that talking to each other is hard, but don't you get it? Killing people isn't going to help them trust you!

We don't always come back. And it hurts us when we lose someone too.

[ But to the spirits, who have seen more fill in the gaps each month, who wipe out a group on command to reset everything and then more just keep coming back, can they really see them as individuals coming and going or do they just see faceless masses?

The way they call them all "the spirits", and only a few of them by anything resembling a name. ]

I believe you. I want us to work together. But killing us is only going to make that harder!

[ They can't all be hardened horrorterrors tempered by a hundred years of darkness or something, gosh. ]

Yeah, get used to it.

This isn't one-sided. Tell me what you want from us.

I will. Thanks.

[ This has still yielded a lot more than he expected; they can work on "long term" goals some other time. ]
