This is Wade. Doc Hicks and I wanted to put the word out that anyone who needs medical attention now or in the future can find one of us - I'm in Room 310 and Gene's camped out by the bonfire. We're in the process of establishing a clinic in the chapel vestry for the sick and injured. If you have any information on new medical developments from your time or have any medications from the future, please share them.

And lastly: if you go out into the woods, bring one of us along. That's what we're here for.

( He absolutely does. Even if it's just his voice, he sounds harsh and stern, and like he's not in the mood for chit chat. He'd rather get a better understanding of what this man's qualifications are than anything else. )

Very well then. Tell me, what sort of work did you do as a medic?

[preseance]

( it ain't quite like an act of demanding credentials or anythin' of the sort. an' even if it were, he wouldn't be offended. anyone could claim to be anythin' here, after all. )

Well, Doc Wade an' I are both soldiers. We served on the front lines of the Second World War, though not together. We both have an aptitude for managin' trauma an' doin' all manner of life-saving interventions under fire. Anythin' from bullet holes to broken bones, an' we've both attended surgeries enough we reckon we can bull our way through if there ain't no one better suited.

I doubt there would be anyone like that, short of an actual surgeon.

( Javert hasn't met any of Beacon's magic contingent yet, but even if he did, his point would still stand. He's not subjecting himself to witch's voodoo, not when there are two perfectly capable doctors around. )

What country did you and Doctor Wade serve for? I'm curious as to whether we even come from the same world.

( He's not going to lie, the sound of a second world war sounds pretty concerning. )

America, sir. 1945 and '44 respectively. If we are from the same world an' you give me a year, I can probably help fill the gaps in your knowledge some.

( 'i see ghosts' isn't quite like saying 'i'm an amateur historian' but. it is what it is. )

France, 1832. King Louis Philippe was the ruler at the time. Does that match with your world history?

( It's a relief, at least, to hear he's from a country Javert is actually familiar with. )

( his mouth curves at one corner. lord almighty but he loves the french. the maquis have fought in this war longer an' harder than just about anybody. vichy france weren't ever the real thing. )

Yessir. And Charles the Tenth before him, if I remember my history rightly.

[policier]

You do.

( Javert is not easily impressed, but even he can't help but feel a little assured by the younger man's knowledge. His tone lightens just a bit, and it's the closest thing he will get to a smile, right now. )

But we shouldn't have this conversation here. Let us meet up and talk at the church, or wherever is most convenient for you.

( when you can talk to the dead, an' often do, history's an open book. lotta ghosts are so hungry for the slightest bit'a human contact around they'll sit with you an' while away the eons engaged in all manner of talk. an' he spent an awful, awful lotta days in france. which he's glad of now, if for nothin' else than to have served to put the fella in a state of slightly better cheer. )

Church oughta do. Just, ah, look for two fellas with red crosses on their arms. Can't hardly miss us.

Indeed. I shall meet you there shortly, then.

( he's workin' whenever javert drops on in. rippin' up sheets an' foldin' them for later use. just in case. he ain't a man what's keen on sittin' quiet an' still. always somethin' to be done in war, after all.

when the other man enters, he'll pause an' look up, an' upon seein' the fellow he'll raise a hand in greeting. )

( Javert appears just as punctually as he promised, dressed in his police uniform, which should only make his identity that much more obvious. He walks over to where Gene is sitting, not returning the greeting until he's seated down next to him, stiff and formal. )

Thank you for meeting me. ( He says, then waves a hand at the makeshift bandages. ) I hope you're not too busy?

( oh, he recognizes it plain enough. how many ghosts did he see in france, after all? an' a fair number of 'em dressed like this. gene stands briefly when javert approaches an' only sits again once he does. )

It ain't any trouble.

( he puts the last of the bandages into the old box he's usin' to store 'em an' sets it on the pew beside him, leanin' forward an' claspin' his hands between his knees. )

So what can I do for ya, sir?

( A man after his own heart. They barely even met and Javert already feels like he likes him. He's respectful and diligent. Javert tips his head a little, which is about as proper of greeting as anyone is going to get from him outside of a bow. )

We were going to talk about history. ( He sits with his back ramrod straight, and his hands on his thighs. )

You must be well-educated, to be able to know so much.
