This is Wade. Doc Hicks and I wanted to put the word out that anyone who needs medical attention now or in the future can find one of us - I'm in Room 310 and Gene's camped out by the bonfire. We're in the process of establishing a clinic in the chapel vestry for the sick and injured. If you have any information on new medical developments from your time or have any medications from the future, please share them.

And lastly: if you go out into the woods, bring one of us along. That's what we're here for.

[ wade gives a small but genuine smile in response to that, handing the cigarette back - gene's turn to smoke, his to talk. there's something comforting to having an almost formulaic give and take. ] Consider it a favor from a colleague.

Oh, I see. I haven't heard tell of it, but I'd be glad to learn.

( he can extrapolate, now that he's gone and got the full name. if memory serves, his division surgeon might've mentioned somethin' similar a time or two, but so far as he knows it's only ever been tried on dogs. he'll probably call wade over an' ask him off-screen if he's heard of it in greater detail. med school's a helluva lot better than a few weeks at fort benning. )

Unfortunately, I didn't bring anything that could help you here. [ no medicines from 2019, alas. ] But I might be able to answer some questions, if the need arises. [ on medical developments, though it's far from his field. ] Can do some basic first aid in an emergency, but consider me your last resort.

[ his experience is almost entirely on himself, all those long years alone. his hands have since been put to different, dirtier work. ]

Even just a description of any sort'a medicine from your time would help, 'cause we can ask Rastus if he can go on an' get it for us. We got anythin' better than penicillin yet?

[ wade smiles when he hears the familiar voice - melisandre is a strange woman, one who was likely shunned during her time, but she seems to have a genuinely kind soul, and her knowledge may prove to be very useful here given that traditional medicines are in limited supply. ] I'd be glad to learn too. Thank you.

( what. how. how is that a face. he stares at it a long spell, and even turns his tablet this way an' that to try and figure it out. it ain't until he tips it on one edge that he sees it. ah. )

And you shouldn't go alone. Wait until there are enough people to send out a proper group. One soldier and a noncombatant aren't a match for some of the stuff that might be out there.

( well, that softens him up some. he doesn't like how bad he'd bristled at the request, more-so because he does genuinely like raylan. it's a holdover from bein' on the front lines an' despairin' at the concept of casual use of anything. )

But we should have a shipment of meds comin' in next month, and a couple tabs ain't gonna make or break us.

[ wade frowns at the screen. he's not dense, and after being around other men with little to no female company he's pretty easily able to catch the spartan's meaning. his issue isn't with the principle - he's thought about being with other men himself - but more with the wording. the strange sense of entitlement and the lack of respect - and the general nebulous sense of unease he gets from the message. ]

I'm not the master of you, no. But I am your doctor, and there are better places to do what you seem to plan on doing than a forest rife with danger. Provided that Doc Hicks is interested.

[ which, as far as irwin's aware, he isn't - unless gene hasn't mentioned this aspect of his private life, which wade figures would probably make sense upon further reflection. he's not quick to share things, which isn't altogether surprising for an individual in their line of work; wade himself shares that tendency. if that is the case, it wouldn't be fair to hold it against him; it's not as if they've known each other for a while, and most men, himself included, tend to be quiet about this sort of thing. still, it's a stark reminder that there's a lot he still doesn't know about his new colleague. ]

[ he keeps the question deliberately vague, figuring the subsequent 'are you comfortable with this? is implied, and if gene is, he'll either talk about it or not talk about it. it's not irwin's business or his right to probe. ]

( he glances up from where he's sorting german bandages outta his kit, an when he sees what wade's referencing there's a sort of. resigned twitch to his brow. )

I do, yeah. Met that fella on my first day in. He's, ah. Forward.

( his tone's neutral on the matter, but he ain't troubled by it. he can manage himself. )
