[ The look on Rafe's face is more than worth the agony of standing here pretending to like each other for three minutes while they discuss Nate's magic like normal people. With a wave of a hand over his face Nate shatters the illusion and it's him again, the broad smile fading just enough to border on smug. ]

There's hearing about it and there's seeing it, which I think warrants a little bit of surprise.

[ Understatement of the year, but let Rafe have this little bit, all right. It's a struggle to regain his poise, watching Nate warily as if he'll pull the same trick again just to unnerve him. Nate has sure as hell been enough of a little shit to warrant the suspicion.

[ It's surprising to see Rafe so ruffled. Normally he maintains a quiet air of- not dignity, exactly but poise. Calm. The thing veneer of charm and put-togetherness covering up everything Nate knows is volatile and hair-trigger. To upset that balance if only for an instant is oddly satisfying. ]

[ Hopefully Nate enjoyed it while it lasted because Rafe is quick to repair said poise, plastering up the cracks until the facade is smooth and even again. Christ. This is the last place, the last person who needs to catch him in a slip like that. He can't won't let it happen again. ]

Actually, her name was Lup? I never learned if it was short for Chalupa, I should have asked.
