• A whole host of people have gone missing since the party... We haven't found their bodies or their lanterns yet, but I think it's safe to assume they're probably gone. [Probably. But the idea that they shouldn't rush into things, shouldn't make decisions and shouldn't volunteer other people without thinking on it and considering options, is one he can get behind. No point in being impulsive. That's how people get killed.]

Do you have others in particular that you're looking to get to know?

Ah, yes. I noticed a few by their network names challenging the Keeper. Most of them had excellent points and reasonable logic rather than knee-jerk emotional responses, those are the type of people I'd love to meet.

[if he's not volunteering names it's because he feels like Rosinante has enough work on his own shoulders already, no need to pick his brain for identities.]

[Even in the current circumstances, he can't help but smile just a little, just for a moment. Yeah, that sounds like a helpful set of people for Cao Pi to speak to, all right. He saw a few himself in that network post, of course - but he really has had a lot weighing on him lately. Hasn't read every comment yet, though he intends to get back to it once he's had a moment to mourn those who went missing.]

Good. I'm sure you'll find yourself some pleasant company that way. Let me know if I can assist in any way, aside from the meeting you suggested. I'd like to see what information we can dig up.

[Of course, he doesn't begrudge the others their emotional responses. He completely understands. But Cao Pi isn't interested in them, and is more easily handled when one appeals to his ever-so-rational and intellectual side. It must make him feel intelligent and powerful to be associated with those particular traits.]

Oh, I will. I'm still learning your particular set of knacks but you have some good ones.

[even if they haven't really bonded on a friendlier level, Rosinante is pretty much the one person Zihuan can say he trusts, although he's aware that road doesn't go both ways. But then, he'll be really shocked if anyone decides they trust him in turn. That'll be their first mistake.]

Now who is the one consumed with vengeance?

[A compliment? How generous. He's always suspicious of those. People cave to them so easily. At least in this case, he does understand where the flattery comes from. When it comes to his particular trade, he has a few skills he's honed. A few things he knows he's good at, that give him some sort of value.]

Well, if you want to talk somewhere more comfortable, I wouldn't mind a cup of tea.

[He hadn't even bothered to respond to her message. It seemed disingenuous even to someone like Kuai who believed the best in everyone. ]

None of the other deaths have taken so long. And all for what? Are we better off now than we were before?

[Hooking up the lighthouse to the network had seemed like a good idea at the time: another person who'd lived through the previous reset who could potentially assist them. But having seen her cavalier attitude about it all he was immediately resentful and wondered if there might have been a better way. Of course that was in hindsight, nothing to be done about it now.]

It's too early to judge. I'm curious to hear what Doctor Ingram will say on the subject.

[He doesn't completely trust Will either, of course. That would be foolish. But he trusts him more than someone who, intentionally or otherwise, ended up killing about a third of the population of the town. Someone who has done so repeatedly in the past, now that he understands more about what her role means.]

She has information that will help us, I don't doubt that. But learning it, and discerning which statements are true and which aren't, will be the real challenge.

Has she said anything of value yet? I didn't read further than her initial statement.

[Someone really needs to let Kuai know that it's not dishonorable to read other people's public messages.]

I doubt he'll be pleased about Captain Winters' death. And he seems to know a lot about the network. Perhaps connecting her to it has repercussions we hadn't considered.

[She might now have the ability to spy on them through the tablets now for all he knows. How would they be able to tell?]

Quite a lot. I'm still going through it all. I'm going to put together a list of relevant information. Lord Cao Pi, meanwhile, spoke to me just moments ago about arranging a town meeting to discuss how to handle the situation and we can go over what she said there.

[It's a lot, and he doesn't remember it all off the top of his head, so pardon him if he doesn't detail everything out loud right now.]

But yes, there are surely repercussions. And from what she said, there's a lot more to this world in terms of threats to our existence than we had realized also. More that they've been withholding.

Have you thought of not attempting to pick fights with those who could easily end your existence?

Vengeance that is justified, unlike the action taken towards me.

That'd be for the best. And then we'd be able to judge the sentiment of everyone else towards her.

[Which he assumes will be negative, but then again he's a terrible judge of these things.]

Why would they hold back on dangerous things that might put us all at risk? They'd be in peril as well.

I don't know. Winters and Ingram had both said they wanted us to have a chance to settle in. The Keeper said she had maps of everything, but wanted to keep them from us because it was more fun for us to find out information ourselves, or something twisted.

[And he's openly angry about that as he growls the response out, because that doesn't make sense to him. What possible good could it do to not show them their surroundings? Why have the others, even poor lost Winters, constantly told him there's no point going out on the lake? He's gone from suspicious to just angry about it, but he isn't sure just yet what to do with that anger.]

The Keeper also said there's someone else who knows more, who might turn up at some point to tell us something. More pointless vague comments, no substance. Nothing to actually do anything to help us.

[he means it, too! Credit where credit is due and all that. But he also means it as an acknowledgement that he knows that Rosinante knows his game. Touche, might as well keep playing in case others are watching]

Has the store come by actual tea, yet? I found the offerings last month highly lacking.

I don't think my palate is as refined as yours. The black tea with a little milk and sugar seems fine.

[Nothing like Sengoku's preferred green teas, always easy to drink without adding anything, but plenty acceptable all the same. It's mostly an offer to let Cao Pi learn more about him, since he implied he could use the opportunity. Might as well, Rosinante figures, if they're to work together on anything at all. He's still going to be far from an open book, but hey. One step at a time.]

Sure, but we’ve only been here for what, two months? Sixty days, maybe, at most. It’s not enough time to establish commonalities or patterns — normal’s still a bit ambiguous. Last month, we weren’t attacked. But then, last month we also didn’t venture to the lighthouse. It’d been touted as a risk from the start, and Winters was expecting hostility which says something.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love for it to be abnormal but my gut says we’re going to have to look at what we’re doing and what previous groups did as much as the numbers.

Share with the class when you’ve got something?

[ Do any of them remember how they got on the ferry to begin with? Sounds like captivity to him. But then, he hasn't had any discussions about the phenomenon that actually brings them here.

He uses the word massacre, and Riku looks at him without alarm, but more like he's searching his face thoughtfully. ]

I can't imagine how lonely and afraid she's been in this endless darkness. Wondering if she'll be doomed to stay up in that lighthouse forever.

I feel bad for her. Except these same reasons are why I don't think trusting her is wise.

[ Vanitas slips along the shadows clinging to the edges of this space and Riku tracks him with his eyes, subtle shifts against the dark and the gleam of his golden eyes. It's just a technicality, when he could track him by the scent of his Darkness, strong and cloying. ]

...You're looking for him?

[ Riku's too tired to hold back the surprised exhale of his observation, maybe a wild guess, but there was some kinship between Dawn and Vanitas that Riku didn't know enough to quantify. A connection.

Dawn had never been afraid of the dark, after all. He stood with both feet firmly planted in it, embraced it, used its power with a freedom Riku had lacked when they first met.

His nails bite crescents into the leather covering his palms, he doesn't look away, but his teeth are grit enough that the muscle in his jaw jumps in the candlelight. His breath stales in his lungs around the heavy, tightening band that squeezes his heart: Dawn is gone and Riku has no illusions that he's gone somewhere better. ]
