• A whole host of people have gone missing since the party... We haven't found their bodies or their lanterns yet, but I think it's safe to assume they're probably gone. I believe her story about how the lighthouse keeper gets that duty. We saw firsthand the influence she has over the forest spirits.

I also don't doubt her that the lighthouse serves as her lantern.

[ Riku loosely curls a hand into a fist and taps a knuckle to his chin, thoughtfully. After a moment, he spreads his open palm and lets it drop. ]

There's a saying: trust but verify. Guess you could say I'm skeptical. For instance-

[ And here he hunkers down, taking up a spot next to Rosinante and setting his lantern down at his side. Once he's settled in, he continues. ]

It would be easier to manipulate people torn from their worlds if they're told they're dead, that there's nothing to get back to. If our captors posed as one of us. But even if I say that, it's not like I have any evidence.

[ Riku didn't intend to visit the church again, he was just passing by when he caught the scent of Darkness, and one he's become more familiar with over time. Curiosity is a welcome change from the vacillation between grief and just feeling numb, so he indulges it, the door creaking noisily as he opens it and slips inside.

The scent is stronger here. He eventually picks out Vanitas under the gentle glow of candlelight. ]

This is the first time it's happened for us, as a group.

But as for 'normal'? Doc Ingram or the Keeper would be your best bet for an answer to that question.

[ It was quiet before, but the silence in the church is deafening without any of them around. Vanitas expects someone to turn up, the way that Coraline girl was talking, but that doesn't mean he needs to interact with them.

When Riku picks him out he's standing in the shadow of an archway leading to a side room, one abandoned now the medics are gone. The darkness swallows him up almost completely, but the candlelight reflects out of his eyes, making them luminous in the black. ]

Looking for someone, Riku?

It's a lot of names. Especially considering how many of us there are. I don't know the exact number, but there's certainly less than a hundred.

( by his casual estimate, he'd thought it'd been 50 something. that's nearly a third in the span of a week or less. )

[ The signs of life he's used to finding here are absent. There's no unfamiliar, catchy tune playing on a gramophone. Not even that acrid smell of burning tobacco to make him wrinkle his nose. The cabinet of first aid supplies still sits near the doorway for anyone to take. Riku wonders if Gene will ever stroll back in here, smoking like a chimney, touching lives like he knows how easy they are to lose.

Vanitas isn't being very forthcoming and that tracks, maybe because Riku wanting to know means Vanitas needs to keep it from him, expecting a trap or laying one. Always ready to fight. ]

Just found him. You?

[ Maybe the glance into the empty room behind him, even obscured in the dark as it is, appears a little pointed on Riku's part. ]

Not Winters, Melisandre I think. She helped plan the party.

[He doesn't go so far as to roll his eyes, but yeah. Convenient is right. Ugh.]

I'm not sure her rapport with the others is as strong as you think it is, unless you've heard something from Rastus that I haven't. Ingram is no friend of hers. It doesn't much matter who, anyway, just so long as it's someone we can trust.

[Rosinante already knows who he would nominate, too. Not himself, for he's already gotten irritable with her and while it's not beyond possible to retry, it would be better to use someone who hadn't already gotten off on a bad foot. He'll re-read the messages later to be sure, but.]

Kuai Liang seems level-headed. I trust him.

Captors, huh.

[That's a new one. He's quite happy to have been given an extra shot at life away from some of the things - and people - he left behind. He sees where the comparison comes from, though. Doesn't agree with it, but he sees it. And the rest of that paranoia is sound enough.]

I have no doubt she's manipulating us for one reason or another. One doesn't live through twenty years of massacring groups of people like ourselves without detaching from them.

[ It's about the imaginary line in the sand, the structure Vanitas keeps hunting after: him, the darkness, against them, the light. He might not even tell Sora, if he were here and the one to ask— not even because it's not his business, but simply because Vanitas doesn't know how to turn off. If he isn't pushing back, then what else is he? ]

[ His voice is arch, somewhere between dubious and entertained. It's only surface deep. ]

Are you sure?

[ Vanitas moves, slinks along the wall and between the pillars holding up the ceiling. ]

Are you sure it isn't someone that looks just like you?

Yeah! It was like the highlight of my week before you guys reconnected me. It's boring up here.

[a tip of the head] I wasn't about to take her word for how much she talks to Ingram or how well they get along, but perhaps I did believe her on the topic of Master Rastus. I should approach him for his perspective, if he cares to give it.

[he can even go ask for something he doesn't expressly need as an excuse.]

Ah. Yes, he is earnest and capable. That would be one possibility. I should like to get to know a few others before really exploring that tactic, though.
