what's the best way to ask someone out?

that isn't "just go up to them and ask". I've tried, it don't work.

...asking for a friend, of course.

Still mean what I said. That takes guts.
I don't know if there's a bulletproof approach. Never really got the hang of talking about the really important stuff, either. Your friend could consider what they stand to lose.
