For certain? Not entirely. But it comes after a basic logical consideration: if there was someone else here, even if they are too far for us to reach on foot easily, why are they not already working to 'bring light to this world?' Why should that burden be laid on those of us who find ourselves here after death?

For all we know the spirits are what is left of this world's inhabitants. But there is much yet we haven't uncovered.
