This is Wade. Doc Hicks and I wanted to put the word out that anyone who needs medical attention now or in the future can find one of us - I'm in Room 310 and Gene's camped out by the bonfire. We're in the process of establishing a clinic in the chapel vestry for the sick and injured. If you have any information on new medical developments from your time or have any medications from the future, please share them.

And lastly: if you go out into the woods, bring one of us along. That's what we're here for.

( he just keeps quiet on that matter. 'relaxation' ain't a word any of the hicks boys have ever known. an' peace wouldn't know what to do with him. )

Even just a description of any sort'a medicine from your time would help, 'cause we can ask Rastus if he can go on an' get it for us. We got anythin' better than penicillin yet?

[ he pauses to think, consider what'd be useful to mention. ]

Some people are allergic to penicillin. [ first thing's first. ] It's still good to have on hand, but you'll want alternatives. [ he'll name a couple of common ones he's aware of. ] For minor skin injuries, topical antibiotics are good to have on hand. Something like -- no, you haven't heard of Neosporin. [ by way of explanation, ] 1970s. It's an ointment with three antibiotics: neomycin, polymyxin B, bacitracin.

Oh, I know. Sulfa too.

( always a rough thing, when one of the boys has an allergic reaction to that. most of 'em were tested prior, but. not everyone. army standards all. )

Ain't heard of the others, but anythin' that works for topical treatment would be good to have on hand. I'll be honest, I'm a little leery about relyin' on supply drops, though.

( he ain't got a reason to distrust rastus yet, but. he's also gone for weeks on end without anythin' from the front, an' he knows it's better to make do with what you've got than pine over what you don't. )

[ five had raided broken down drugstores, in the apocalypse. shattered houses, old medicine cabinets. tried to figure out what would help and what wouldn't, when it came to bloody gashes from shards of glass, burns from still-smoldering remains, sickness from bad food, bad water, bad air. he probably would've been willing to kill -- long before the commission -- for something like a supply drop.

but understands the sentiment, in these circumstances, even agrees. ]

You're right to be. If we rely too heavily on them, we're vulnerable. [ huffs out a breath, darkly amused. ] We're vulnerable anyway, but we have to be ready for disruptions to supply drops. Otherwise one day, nothing, and we're shit out of luck.

( it still disturbs him some, how worldly five is. how he knows things he ought not to at his age. gene shakes his head. )

Might not be a bad idea to have a stockpile elsewheres, then. Apart from the Clinic an' the Inn. You find any place like that in all your travels?

Town Hall, maybe. There's a boathouse by the harbor, some covered space there too, but that might be too far away in case of an emergency. More exposed, too.

[ harder to keep an eye on -- just in case. ]

( he makes a thoughtful noise. )

I'll dwell on it some. I definitely wouldn't want it too far away should anything happen.

( and it'll need to be in the direction they might have to retreat. which begs the question — is it the water they ought to fear, or the forest? )

Forget the Town Hall. [ added after a beat ] Storing some supplies outside of the town will be a risk, but so will keeping everything in one place.

[ the town can be destroyed as easily as anywhere else, supplies targeted. it's the kind of thing he'd do. ]

Well, if'n I couldn't find a half-decent place in a buildin', the thought was to bury it.

( seems a soldierly thing to do. wrap it in a scrap of canvas and put somethin' down in the earth. emergencies only. ain't such a thing as a supply drop here, save rastus. an' gene still don't know what exactly he can bring in an' how reliable he'll be.

can't be any worse than the goddamn army, though. )

[ that does seem a soldierly thing to do, and five finds himself unsurprised by the suggestion for that reason. ]

That's a good thought. We'd just have to make sure not to lose it, but you wouldn't.

[ make such a rookie error. ]

( he feels like gettin' even a tangential compliment outta five is a rare an' wondrous event, so he's smilin' just a touch on reply. )

Long as the poles stay constant, I should be all right. Why don't you an' I scout out some places over the next few days? That way it ain't just one soul what knows where it is, an' not so many that things might go missin'.

( gene's nice, but he ain't naive. he knows how humans are. )

Why would you want me along for that?

[ like, buddy. have you met him. get someone actually nice or helpful for this. ]

( you don't have to sound so surprised. )

So you were dropped on your head as a child.

[ it's. the only explanation, like HE'S NOT EVEN TRYING TO BE DELIBERATELY MEAN AT THIS POINT. he sounds disbelieving, not sarcastic. it's just the only thing that makes sense! ]

You kiddin'? I think I fell off every structure over about six feet high Alabama even has.
