This is Wade. Doc Hicks and I wanted to put the word out that anyone who needs medical attention now or in the future can find one of us - I'm in Room 310 and Gene's camped out by the bonfire. We're in the process of establishing a clinic in the chapel vestry for the sick and injured. If you have any information on new medical developments from your time or have any medications from the future, please share them.

And lastly: if you go out into the woods, bring one of us along. That's what we're here for.

I'm out of meds and biofoam but I can do first aid. And even if I'm not great at it yet, I did learn a healing spell from a friend in the last place I was trapped. It's probably better for small stuff until I get more practice in.

[ Let's be real, there are going to be injuries to practice on. ]

If you think 'biofoam' would be useful to have, we can consider asking Rastus for it.

( he can sort of... infer what manner of medicine it's meant to be, but wash is military an' gene trusts to that. wound stabilization in the future is bound to be better than what they've got. )

Does your healing spell work on internal injuries (such as soft tissue injuries) or is it better suited to external injuries such as cuts and scrapes?

Biofoam is always useful, but it's temporary. It'll start to break down after a few hours so if you're not running a healing unit it's really just meant as a quick fix until you can get to a medic. Or stabilize someone really seriously injured to transport them.

I've only ever used the spell on injuries I could see -- bruises and cuts. One time I did it on a more serious wound and was only able to stop the bleeding, not close the skin myself, and the guy who finished the job said I just needed more practice. And a few days ago I tried it on a sprained ankle and it didn't completely fix it, but magic seems dampened here. I still thought it was worth mentioning.

[ that actually gets a chuckle out of him, albeit one borne of shared suffering. ] I'll second that. Don't know if there's VD in the afterlife, but if there is I think we'll probably be the second and third people to know about it. Should probably give them a few minutes to regroup first, though.

[ and, for a moment, he feels a sense of relief - gene seemed to have shrugged the topic off without much issue, which he'd more-or-less expected, given that the conversation probably would have gone about the same if they were both alive and in a combat zone. no need to make a big deal of it when you might not even live to see the next morning, and now that they're dead, it still doesn't feel like something that's really critical to discuss. the thought chews at the edge of his mind, though - gene could definitely do better than someone as unnerving as the spartan he'd just spoken to.

wade reaches out in a silent request for their communal cigarette--and, just as he does, two people begin to make their joint presence in the sacristy decidedly known, as well as what they're doing there. topical. ] Well. Seems like we may find out sooner rather than later.

[ it makes sense that people would still be having sex in the afterlife, and wade's hardly faint-of-heart where conversation about these things is concerned - but it's jarring to encounter it in a church immediately after skirting around the topic of another man propositioning one's colleague. ]

Well, Wade'n'me are the same rank, that bein' T4. So I reckon it's only fair if you're the boss, otherwise he an' I'd have to fight for it.

An' just between us, I think he'd be a sore loser.

( he is absolutely saying that 100 percent in jest, probably while looking STRAIGHT AT WADE across the room. )

It's a technician rankin'. Means we're both specialists in our field an' got a certain amount of know-how, that bein' the medic'in' thing.

( 'medicking'? medic-ing? those are not words, gene. )

Mostly our boys would address us as 'Doc', but we're NCOs equivalent to sergeants on the ground. Reckon it's about clear as mud to a civilian, because it was 'bout the same to us.

( especially since some units used the technician grades, some stuck with specialist, some added insignia to their patches an' some didn't. lordy, but it was a shitshow an' gene didn't really bother keepin' up with it proper. too busy savin' lives than adherin' strictly to military protocol. )

[It takes Kyna a second to respond, because she's making Wash explain what an NCO is. When she comes back, she switches to voice.]

In the right circumstances, yeah. Usually that bein' some manner or other of medical emergency. Lowest medic can pull rank on the highest general if'n there's a need.

( he only pulled rank a few times in the war, once when captain st. amos was refusin' aid after nearly gettin' his fool ass blown off, an' once on their el-tee.

[ five had raided broken down drugstores, in the apocalypse. shattered houses, old medicine cabinets. tried to figure out what would help and what wouldn't, when it came to bloody gashes from shards of glass, burns from still-smoldering remains, sickness from bad food, bad water, bad air. he probably would've been willing to kill -- long before the commission -- for something like a supply drop.

but understands the sentiment, in these circumstances, even agrees. ]

You're right to be. If we rely too heavily on them, we're vulnerable. [ huffs out a breath, darkly amused. ] We're vulnerable anyway, but we have to be ready for disruptions to supply drops. Otherwise one day, nothing, and we're shit out of luck.

[She snickers, but her tone is gently teasing when she responds.]

But, ah. Guess things're a bit difference in a crisis, you know? Pleasantries get tossed on out for the utility of the moment. You can't undo death, but y'can apologize for poor manners.

( not that he's ever really rude. even in a situation puttin' its demands on him, he's always stayed calm an' collected, but. he's certainly gotten short with a few fellas. )

( carol st amos is just about the most unpleasant s.o.b in all the land, big as a bear an' twice as mean besides, but he's good at what he does an' he loves his men. there ain't a man in love company that doesn't think the good captain would steer them wrong. but gene's heard him cuss a blue streak off a barn, too. )

But if you're sure, maybe Wade'n'me can draw straws.

It sounds like it'd be useful for stabilization if nothing else. I'll see about getting some in. Do you know the medical components in it? In case Rastus doesn't recognize its commercial name?

I see. Well, if you want the experience Wade and I can call you if we get something that seems to be within your skillset that won't be overwhelming.

( they won't always have the luxury, but. he knows just enough of wash to think that he's damn tired of the war an' the fightin', and gene doesn't want to put more on him than he can handle. lord, if the man were in his care gene would've insisted he take furlough by now. )

Nah. Wade can't be the leader because he thinks my jokes are dumb.

( the sound's hard to place at first, but the conclusion hits he an' wade about the same time. gene is very, very quiet for a moment, an' then he's shakin' his head. givin' that cigarette on over. then he just leans back in his chair, runs a hand through his hair an' sighs. )

Christ o'Lordy. Reckon we oughta knock an' ask 'em if they need a rubber?

What a right scoundrel. I'm appalled, I surely am.

( the mock-indignation is hittin' peak, over here. )

[She lets out a little huff. He's faking, but she'll take it anyway.]
