This is Jim Gordon.

I took the liberty of gathering a loose inventory of what we've got for supplies after the incident on the docks. With what was salvaged from the ferry that made it back to the General Store [ because he's positive not all of it did ] I'd say we have a little under a month of food to go around.

I know I haven't been here for very long, but I think it might be worth talking about rationing what we have left.

From what I've been able to gather, that ferry was our only line in or out to whatever mainland is sending in supplies. Without it, we don't know when, or how, we'll be getting replenished again.

The city I'm from— [ Jim's voice doesn't crack, there's an audible pause before he goes on. ] The city I'm from we've been separated from the mainland for months with very little to go around. I can tell you from experience this isn't going to be easy: but if we want to survive, we're going to have to help each other out.

Not only. I can eat anything you can, probably. I just might get a little sick if I don't have enough meat.

That's why I was hoping there was something to hunt. Or to fish. Then I wouldn't have to eat up you people's stores. If there's not... like I said. Pretty shitty.

Yeah, shitty's a word for it.

We have a lot more dietary requirements than I was expecting.

[Stone comes from a world of many, many intelligent species. The very idea that Jim's world only has the one, where everyone eats pretty much the same stuff, just plain doesn't occur to him.}

An allergy or two would've been the biggest roadblock we had where I'm from. Humans are pretty flexible when it comes to what they can eat to survive.

But you didn't think to expect any other species? That's a little sort-sighted of you.

Hah... well, the Earth that I'm from doesn't really have any other intelligent species to worry about.

[scarsolderthanyou]

... huh. I don't know about any Earth, but it sounds pretty strange. Only one species? My world has dozens, maybe hundreds.

[saintjames]

Sounds busy.

[scarsolderthanyou]

[Stone chuckles.]

It's a big world, kid. There's room for all of us and then some.

[saintjames]

[ Wow how long has it been since someone called him kid? Jim laughs under his breath. ]

Yeah, I think I'm having the crash course right now.
