[ well, there's no way to say it, except to say it, so: ]

One of us died today. Big guy, blond hair. I don't know his name. I found his body.

[ that's his schtick, isn't it? finding bodies. ]

What I do know is that he fell on some rocks near the beach. Looks like an accident, no foul play. The fall shouldn't have killed him.

[ could've, if the bastard really were that unlucky, but it's unlikely. besides: ]

But it did break his lantern. Seems like Winters was telling the truth about that after all. Before anyone asks:

1) No, I didn't see it happen.
2) Yes, I checked for a pulse.
3) No, I didn't do it.

[ juST COVERING HIS BASES THERE ]

One more thing. I had to step away to get my tablet. When I came back, both he and his lantern were gone. No one else was here, I'm positive. They just vanished into thin air.

[ ooc | so as of today, rosinante ([personal profile] callada) is dead :C feel free to threadjack in this post and use it for discussion or whatever! ]

when you use identify on a person instead of an object you get a vibe from them
idk how to explain it
i guess it's like when you see the silhouette of someone walking towards you in the dark, if you know them well enough, you can tell who it is from the way they're walking?
does that make sense?
it's a little like that, but magic based
so it didn't feel like i was casting it on an object, it felt like i was casting it on myself
i bet if i used it on someone else's lantern it would feel the same

[the last time carol was on earth, it was... the literal 90s, so she has no idea what this actually means. but, context clues tell her it's — some kind of agreement?]

It's the first thing anyone's going to say. Like, no one who actually did it is just going to come out with "I did it." Unless they're actually the stupidest person in the universe.

[right, just a theory, but at the same time, she knows this m.o. this has the supreme intelligence all over it, and the more she thinks about it, the worse it feels.]

A trusting captive is more likely to become a willing captive, and is also easier to deal with in general.

[ She stares at her lantern again. Well. That didn't really bode well for her state of being then, all things considered. ]

That's so weird... what the heck is going on here.

Or a supervillain! Though I guess you can argue they're kind of stupid...

it's probably connected to us more deeply
like
okay, so in order to use magic i need something called a focus
it can be anything, but there's this whole ritual i need to do to attune it to me, and after that it's sort of a part of me
if someone touches it without permission it feels super gross, and if someone destroys it i can feel it and it fucks me up for a while
so maybe the lanterns are like that, just more intense

This is exactly the shit I've been talking about
What if someone killed him?

i mean whatever floats your boat but there's still going to be some people needing that steep learning curve

You have a theory, then? Or are you just an unbiased bystander with no opinion on the matter?

I think you can definitely argue that.

See? My point still stands.

this assumes there was some point where it wasn't exhausting dealing with inane bullshit

Yeah... I just wanted to add that caveat.

[ A small pause. ]

Sorry.
